Swiggy's new venture explores beyond food

On Wednesday, the food delivery platform Swiggy launched Swiggy Go in Bengaluru. Through Swiggy Go, the company will provide instant pick up and drop service to deliver packages anywhere across the city.

Swiggy Go will directly challenge Dunzo, a popular company that provides similar services. Swiggy claims that Swiggy Go can be used to pick up and drop off  laundry, get forgotten keys, send lunch boxes from home to office or even deliver documents or parcel to the users. Which is similar to what Dunzo has been doing.

In August, Swiggy Go was Beta tested on a few users in Bengaluru. Although it is launched only in Bengaluru currently, the company is planning to expand it to over 300 cities by 2020.

This new service clearly shows how the company wants to expand its market space from food delivery business to other avenues. While its local rival Zomato is trying to assume more control over the food delivery business, Swiggy is making sure it captures other markets before any of its competitors reach there.

Swiggy has also announced that it would be launching Swiggy Stores in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Swiggy Stores is an on-demand delivery service, which delivers at the user’s doorstep items like groceries, flowers, medicines along with other things within one hour. Swiggy Go will be part of the main app. Interestingly, Swiggy stores were first launched in Gurugram six months ago.

Swiggy’s vision is to elevate the quality of life of urban consumers by offering unparalleled convenience. After enabling this with food delivery for five years and stores across the city with Swiggy Stores, Go will open the Swiggy delivery superpower to all consumers in the city”, said Sriharsha Majety, CEO, Swiggy.

The company has tied up with more than 300 merchant-partners, in Bangalore. The platform will deliver from stores like Godrej, Nature’s Basket, Nilgiri’s, Organic World, Heads Up For Tails and Nandu’s chicken.

In Hyderabad, Swiggy has made deals with almost 200 merchant-partners.

It will be delivering from merchant-partners like Ghanshyam, Ratandeep, Yellow and Greens and 24 Organic Mantra, and deliver from any store in the city chosen by the customer.

Swiggy said that all the deliveries for Swiggy Go and Swiggy Stores will be done by Swiggy’s dedicated fleet. According to Swiggy, this will give Swiggy’s delivery partners an additional channel of income.
